It is that time of the week again! We had a fantastic play test recently here as a bit of a birthday bash. Schedules for player arrival got a bit thrown off but we made do with an absolutely chaotic battle. To start with, Dark Eldar and Squats were teamed up with 3000 points each. Squats rolled in with three Hekaton Land Fortresses and a bunch of Berzerkers. Some additional units provided some fire support, and all three Hekatons were armed differently for play testing.
Dark Eldar came in with a pirate like raiding force. I brought an Eldar Webway to hold Objectives and protect some Squats, while the rest of my force focused on a stealthy cruise in. Because we won initiative, I started my force on the field instead of majority in Reserve. The opposing force had brought little in the way of heavy ranged fire power, so as long as I stayed High Altitude with my vehicles I could engage priority targets with limited but effective fire power.
Against us was an initial force of 4500 points of Tyranids, who were kind enough to not bring a bunch of Barbed Hierodules and shoot me out of the sky right away. As the game progressed, a late player brought about 1500 points of Death Krieg with Termites and some Rough Riders. The Tyranids had lost their heavy hitters quickly due to the squadron of Ravagers toting a total of nine Dark Lances hunting their key units. The arrival of the Krieg pinched a Hekaton between two Termites and Veterans with Meltaguns. One was remove immediately, and the others had to scamper.
Slightly later, another roughly 1500 points or so of Orks joined the Tyranids and Krieg as reserves. The game had to get called off a bit early due to life happening, but there was no shortage of targets!
Ultimately it was a test drive for the Squat 3.0 Codex and the Dark Eldar 2.0 Codex. Both ran smoothly like I had hoped and will continue to see play testing and tweaking. Hopefully we will have these finalized and published soon! With the schedules the way they were just decided to have fun and prioritize testing the codexes out against established ones that have already gone through the trials.
This blew us way past the 3200 man hour investment mark! Always exciting and sometimes overwhelming to think how much time I have put into JUST writing, discussing, and testing Alternate 40k Rules, let alone Warhammer 40k itself. This also hit my 21 year mark of various Warhammer playing. This hobby has been massively enjoyable and a fantastic creative outlet.
The entire reason these rules are being written is to offer another way to enjoy the game to others who are similarly invested but do not care for the current style of play. We hope you enjoy your wargaming however you choose to enjoy it and will catch you next time!
