Exciting news everyone! The long awaited Imperial Knights Codex is live! Chaos will continue to undergo tests but is on its final stages as well.
As veteran players of editions long past know, balancing a purely vehicle army is really hard, particularly if its Titanic! This Codex has caused more grief than even the Custodes, but it is finally ready!
All of the Titanic models can be used in any Imperial army as a Lord of War Slot, and any non-Titanic can be used as a Heavy Support.
How we got it balanced was a largely frustrating affair. We got the point formula well tested and proved, but of course Knights were just too much for typical balanced army rosters to handle. We then ran into the issue of Knights being unable to play any kind of Objective game. And then, hyper elite armies like Space Marines had a bad tendency of just getting mulched by their heavier weapons.
I think it was Jordan that came up with the idea of their 5+ Invulnerability Save having to rotate frequencies from a book he read. Changing it to only work on Melee OR Ranged for a turn was a huge shift in the problems we were facing. Suddenly, balanced heavy melee and antitank armies could really put the pressure on the Knights. Dreadnoughts could threaten them no matter what with Melta weapons and Dreadnought Close Combat weapons all by themselves.
Instantly, Marines as a whole could keep up with them in combat. Their Firstborn with Objective Secured could then outnumber Knights early game before their casualties become too great and could no longer keep the pressure on the smaller Knight variants.
Other armies were in general able to slip some more Vehicle Penetrations in per turn. As Knights have limited amounts of weaponry on their chassis for the most part, this means that a balanced army does not have to find a way to kill 4 Titanics in a single 2500 point game, but they can minimize their losses by disabling key weapons or reducing mobility throughout the game.
Lastly, reducing the smaller Knights to 1 model squadrons removed the ability to spam huge quantities of fast moving vehicles with Objective Secured.
After rounds and rounds of discussion from play tests for the past 3 or so years, we finally have them ready! We appreciate your patience and are eager to see what you think!
We also updated the Core Rulebook for readability and to replace some missing keywords. If you see anything missing, let me know! Shout out to Gareth for helping me with the phrasing!
You also may have noticed that Alternate40kRules.com address no longer as the .wordpress! We got enough photos from battle reports to finally fill up the storage and upgraded to a paid plan. For GW legality, let it be stated that this was paid out of pocket by me and no monetary gain has ever been used by Alternate 40k Rules.
As always, happy wargaming! Stay tuned, Squats (Leagues of Votann) will be coming out shortly!
